My relationship and connection with my body began with movement as a child but not in the ways that I was able to recognize immediately. Growing up with two older brothers consisted of sports, games, playful competition, and a lot of being knocked down, wiping my tears, dusting myself off and trying again. Being active was something that I didn't even think about. If my chores were done, and the clock was past noon, I was outside moving my body. I was either dancing, rollerblading or racing up and down the street. At school you could find me somewhere jumping rope, and out jumping the best double dutcher in the school. My childhood not only imprinted on me mentally but it also molded my daily physical needs. Moving my body was a part of who I was.
For the short stint of time I was fortunate enough to take up gymnastics. Coach Martinez was a coach whose energy imprinted on me right away. A serious straight forward yet nurturing energy. You felt the pressure of expectations and the assurance of his presence silently stating you weren't alone. In that short time I (unconsciously) learned that in order to do hard things I had to face to befriend the hard thing, Coach would give me something new to learn. Demonstrating how it looked, explain how to accomplish it, help me show myself that I could do it (spot me), and then leave me to do the hardest part. Befriend the parts of me that didnt believe I could do it on my own. Through trying and failing, over and over again I would adjust what I was doing, slowly getting closer to actually doing it myself until I finally figured it out.
This was my very first rememberance of doing hard things. The process of learning, failing, and self talk on repeat. Not outside noise about what I was mastering within myself. Not needing a lot of external support with what I was in pursuit of. I can't tell you if this was a good or bad thing I just know that my short time in gynastics taught me that you have all you need within.
My journey with my body has been just that "A journey". At some phases swinging me to the complete other side of the pendulum. Like gaining 70 pounds during pregnancy. I was as subborn as a bull (Taurus Northnode) about what I ate and shall I say I over-indulged to the max. My food choices made me even more tired than I would've been had I made better choices. My ex-husband attempted to be a voice of reason to no avail, and as a result I packed on the weight. Postpardum came with a rubberband release when after the 6 weeks I saw where my bull headedness got me. Grateful that neither me nor my baby developed any pregnancy related health conditions because of my lack of self control. I was now left with the consequences. Consequences I knew were avoidable. And accepting where I was, started me on my road back to the little girl who needed movement.
I started off taking classes during my lunch break. That little girl inside of me who loved to move started to take the
lead. Classes gave me my confidence back, and soon after my relationship with my body and movement were back! I
later got certified and started helping people transform their bodies like I did mine. Throughout this time I came to a conscious realization that could've only been found through the contrast of what we had just lived through. This time I understood that in order for me to actually feel connected to the kid within, movement was non-negotiable, movement was a part of my soul's blueprint. And getting back to that part of me required the journey I'd been on yeah, but I also gained the experience to help others (however that looks for me).
A lot of adults active lifestyles began by playing on a team sport as a child. For me my mom couldn't afford to keepkeep me in a sport. So It was skipping, jumping, & sprinting, It was playing tackle football in 12 inches of snow in my backyard. It was me moving because movement brought me joy and made me happy. I didn't necessarily learn the structure of movement until I needed to as an adult. I didn't have team mates to hold me accountable with staying active.....I had life. I had the ability to build a relationship with my body over the course of my life that required that I listen to it by giving it what it needed. I don't know exactly where this portion of my space is headed but I do know that it is my goal to help you get and stay connected with your body- in your own way.
